Question: My young son is saving faithfully and has amassed a few thousand dollars and continues to save at least $100/month. Currently, he has no access to a 401k/403b. He wants to invest in the stock market but I’m reluctant to encourage him in the current market. If he does, what is the best way to proceed?

First, congratulations on having a son who is already saving at the age of 22! He is mastering the key ingredient to investment success, which is managing to save some money in the first place. One’s rate of savings invariably is more important than even the rate of return on those savings. (more…)

Trump’s Legal Troubles… Market Troubles, Too?

The guilty plea Tuesday by President Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, and the near simultaneous felony convictions of former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort have unquestionably increased both the political and legal risks now facing the President. A number of clients have asked for our thoughts on how an impeachment and the possible removal from office of the President might affect the stock market.

First, we should acknowledge that this is a fast-developing story, with new information coming at us daily. Consequently, no one can predict with too much confidence how this will ultimately play out. Here we will simply assume what is implied by the question—a worst-case outcome for President Trump—and examine the potential implications for the market. (more…)
